After evaluating my GAME plan (Cennamo, Ertmer & Ross, 2010), over the past several weeks I have a better understanding of the NET-S. These standards are important not only for teacher’s but also for our students. It is important for our students to see the value in creating a GAME plan and be able to set reasonable goals, make progress or take action, monitor their work and then evaluate the outcome.
To introduce the NET-S into the classroom I would like to create a Power Point presentation with the standards in student friendly terms so they will understand them better. As a whole class we will set two goals for everyone with a plan for them to set another goal for themselves. They will be required to contribute to our class blog to indicate what their GAME plan is and to see how they are progressing towards the goals they have set. I will check to see how they are coming along and help them make adjustments as needed.
At the end of the nine week grading period the students will reflect on their GAME plan to share their accomplishments or failures and what their plans are for future projects and assignments.

I think several of us have noticed that the way the standards are worded will need to be adjusted for them to be understood by our students. I wonder if there is a 'student friendly' listing of the NETS-S standards? Hmmm, a thought.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea you have of having the class choose two and then having each student choose an individual one. I hadn't thought of that but that would allow us to help the students in the process while still giving them some autonomy over their own learning. Great idea!
I just posted a comment on a fellow classmates' blog regarding the student standards (http://teachersetc.blogspot.com). I also asked if there were standards developed specifically for elementary-aged students because I cannot believe that students as young as 7 or 8 would understand the standards. Therefore, I really like how you would create a PowerPoint that would include friendly terms for the students to understand. I am thinking of my own students who are 16-20 and I know that they would struggle understanding what the standards mean. Which grade do you feel is appropriate for implementing the GAME plan? And how much of the language would you change when presenting the standards to your class?

ReplyDeleteIt is very important to make adjustments to wording so that students can gain a clear understanding of the material. The idea of presenting the information via PowerPoint is wonderful. The PowerPoint could be set up in a clear and easy to understand manner and allow students to the opportunity to interact with other another in an educational setting. My students love watching PowerPoint presentations and I have tried several ways to get my students involved with this process through narration and having them change the slides.
It sounds like your ideas for having them establish a GAME plan is very similar to our format in this class. I think that your students would enjoy interacting with one another within their blogs and could gain a better understanding of what it means to give constructive feedback to one another. I like setting classroom goals and a plan to attain them. It helps keep the class focused on a universal goal and to help maintain their progress towards this goal. Using a classroom blog is a great resource to ensure student progress. Good job!

ReplyDeleteIt looks like everyone is taking the same approach for allowing our students to set their own goals. I think the biggest thing with the students is assisting them with creating attainable goals. With the students creating simple, but attainable goals, it will help them with creating more complexed goals not only in school but throughout their lifetime.

ReplyDeleteI think upper elementary, 4th and 5ht grade, is a good age to begin implementing the GAME plan. It is very important when I make adjustments to the standards that students are able to understand them or I haven't accomplished anything. As far as the terms and how I would change the language to student friendly terms. I would like to get some help from my friend in the technology department and/or from any of you have great ideas. I want to make sure that the meaning is the same but, yet in terms they can understand. If I am able to do this I will most certainly share them.
